Background

Prialt^® (ziconotide) is a peptide which is the synthetic equivalent of a peptide found in a marine snail. It is used for the treatment of severe, chronic pain in adults.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is persistent pain where pain signals keep firing in the nervous system over a long period of time. Many chronic pain conditions affect older adults. Common severe, chronic pain complaints include failed back surgery syndrome, cancer pain, arthritis pain and neurogenic pain (pain resulting from damage to the peripheral nerves or to the central nervous system itself).

Clinical Action

Ziconotide suppresses pain by selectively blocking N-type calcium channels on nerves.
