Background

NeuroBloc® (botulinum toxin type B) is a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

It is used to treat cervical dystonia (torticollis) and is only for use in adult patients.

Cervical Dystonia

Cervical dystonia is a condition of abnormal muscle tone and movement that can result in painful abnormalities of posture or inability to flex and relax affected neck and shoulder muscles. The Dystonia Society estimates that there are 40,000 people with cervical dystonia in the UK.

Clinical Action

The botulinum toxin type B compound is effective in the treatment of cervical dystonia through blocking the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This ‘chemical messenger’ is made by nerves and tells muscles to contract. If nerves are prevented from releasing this messenger, abnormal muscle contractions may be reduced or completely stopped.
